Blood sampling is a practical and cost-effective way to gain insights into your flock’s health and nutrition. By taking blood samples at key times of the year, we can identify issues before they become problems — helping you make informed decisions that improve flock performance and profitability.
Pre-Tupping (Late Summer):
Sampling ewes before mating helps assess their nutritional status, particularly trace elements like selenium, cobalt, and copper. Identifying deficiencies at this stage allows for timely supplementation, supporting optimal fertility and embryo development.
Pre-Lambing (3–4 Weeks Before Lambing):
Late pregnancy is a critical period when 75% of lamb growth occurs. Blood sampling at this time evaluates energy balance (via BHB levels), protein intake (urea and albumin), and mineral status. This information guides dietary adjustments to prevent issues like twin lamb disease and ensures ewes produce high-quality colostrum, vital for lamb survival .
Post-Weaning (Late Summer):
Assessing trace element levels in lambs, especially cobalt (vitamin B12), is crucial for growth and immunity. Deficiencies can lead to poor weight gain and increased susceptibility to disease. Blood tests help determine if supplementation is needed, ensuring lambs reach target weights efficiently .
By integrating blood sampling into your flock management routine, you can proactively address nutritional gaps, enhance animal welfare, and improve overall farm profitability. It's a straightforward step that offers valuable insights, helping you make decisions that benefit both your sheep and your bottom line.
